Liner notes by Mats Gustafsson:

"BROM
FRAMES INYOURFACE
How to deal with diverse music traditions and legacies? Traditional music. Untraditional music. And everything in between. How to make something personal within the given frames? When so much already has been done?
Break the frames? Love the frames? Hate the frames? Dismantle the frames? Just fuck the frames? Use the frames?
Exactly! Right ON!
Music and art is built on previous experiences. Of itself. Of life.
What music came first? The Egg? The Hen? The omelet?
We NEED to relate to what is previously done and make something specific and personal with it – in order to fight the everlasting stupidities of the world. You dig?
When I think about origins of music I recall a great experience I had years ago. In the amazing art collection of Günter Christmann and Elke Schipper I found an… old stone.
A very special stone. With holes. Asymmetrically drilled holes. By human hands and minds. The stone can be blown into. And YES – there is a beautiful low-pitched tone appearing. It can even be overblown into a high-pitched sound. Beautiful. The history of this particular stone is mysterious.
There have been experts - and non-experts like me - examining it. And yes… it is old. VERY old. All stones are old one might think... but as a FLUTE… This stone is freaking ancient! No one knows. But the guesses that have been made are towards the direction of even claiming this stone to be one the first known instruments in human history!!! You DIG?
When I sit with the “flute” in my hands. Something happens. Inside of me. Perspectives.
The wings of the past. Pheeeuuwww… it is pretty amazing to make a musical improvisation with this stone. To blow into it. To make some noise. To know that someone else did the same, very very very many years ago. The music is still there. Inside of the stone. How MUSIC evolved from here ---- we can only guess. Some shit happened back in the days. Without any doubt. And musical ideas transformed slowly into the times in where we are living now. In mysterious ways indeed. But always with the history and the legacy of the past as the most crucial parameter for new music to be made.
It is all a pretty simple fact. It is the WAY you use the knowledge of the past that creates the new music. It is HOW you put it together. It is HOW you use your own personal language in an interacting situation, such as it is to be playing in a band.
Personally I think it is the richest legacy we have – to be able to freely (more or less) use ANY elements to create the music that kicks our asses and our minds.
BROM has clearly understood all this.
Using elements freely with and without respect. FUCK THE FRAMES!
USE THE FRAMES!
What we hear on this creative album is totally up to YOU – dear listener, to decide WHAT you hear and if you like it. It is ALL up for grabs.
Check it all out! It is one of the most amazing mixes of musical elements I have heard in a long freakin time.
AND it works. BROM manage to fit it all together. To glue the elements together into a music that kicks serious butt!
ZU! Dizzy Gillespie. Black Sabbath. Shellac. JH3. The Ex. James Chance. The Swans. Whitehouse. Ingebrigt Håker Flaten. Last Exit. Demetrio Stratos. Naked City. Lokomotiv Konkret. Jackie McLean. T R A N S F O R M I N G!!!!
Into BROM music!
Freakin brilliant! Surprisingly alive! And a really great group interplay!
Traditional “liner notes” - analyze of separate pieces will not be made within the structure of this text – I do believe that my personal opinions should be private. And kept like that. So that they don’t color and effect the individual listening experience too much.
(Objective) facts such as: “ listen how tight the interplay between the bass and drums is on the opening track”- “listen to the jazzy bass riff on Tuna” – “ listen to how beautifully the alto sax navigates between the various structures of the song Hematoma!” – “check the KILLER bass sound out on the whole album” - “be aware of the great sequencing of the album, where everything freakin make sense, form wise and musically” - “ check the Sonny Rollins outro out!” etc. etc. -- you dig? We don’t do that – we don’t point shit out like that. It is all up to YOU. To CHECK IT OUT! To DIG! You DIG?
This music kicks serious ass. Seriously badass!!!
FUCK THE FRAMES"
